Moto Safari: The Ballad Of Baboon Valley

Our friends at Moto Safari have another South African adventure ride coming up in October and they are offering 15% off for Sideburn readers. This is how they describe their adventure...

As we descend down from the Baboon Valley to the Eastern Cape of South Africa, the desert turns to green rolling hills, beach sand and dunes that beg to be ridden, wild and unruly waves and deep blue, cold seas. Our prayers to the Gods of Dirt are answered as the blacktop quickly turns into gravel trails which traverse through lunar monoliths and rock formations that are a hundred million years old. The sun dips behind the horizon, our pupils dilate, the near-by lion roars keep our throttle hands firmly pegged and our adrenaline levels high. The days blend into a seamless flow of dust and gravel as we rip through the arid lunar-scape of the Tankwa Karoo Desert on our way to nowhere. A motorcycle tyre graveyard on the way serves as a reminder of the victims claimed by this unforgiving land. Wifi and emails become a distant memory as we delve deeper into the magical trails of the Gamaskloof. Welcome to Heaven, let’s go to Hell. A rock strewn 50km leads us down to the mysterious valley named 'Die Hel' or 'The Hell' in English. Here we meet the weird and wonderful proprietors of this desolate and eerie valley.
